Residents query approval of a third cement factory along the same stretch

RESIDENTS are questioning the approval of a cement factory in Kampung Desa Aman, Sungai Buloh.

The residents have threatened to hold a large-scale protest if Selayang Municipal Council did not act on it.

To the surprise of many residents, a third cement factory has sprung up in Jalan Utama Kampung Desa Aman a month ago.

Unhappy: About 600 residents protested over the cement factory in Kampung Desa Aman.

Seri Aman residents’ security committee member Patrick Lim said there were already two cements factories along Jalan Utama Kampung Desa Aman.

He said the two factories were causing a lot of problems to residents as the cement lorries keep dropping wet cement on the main road while on the way to the work sites.

“This is an ongoing problem and now, a third factory is here.

“It looks like the housing areas are fast changing into an industrial zone with the mushrooming of factories,’’ he said.

Lim lamented the wet cement on the road was cleared and dumped into drains thus clogging the entire drainage in the area.

“There is so much of earthwork carried out at the factory where a slope nearby is being cut and we fear there could be a landslide.

“Jalan Utama Kampung Desa Aman is the main access road out of our residential homes and if the landslide happens, we fear the residents would be cut off from the rest of the world.

It would block the entry and exit points. Another issue is the narrow tunnel which is not lit endangering motorists.

“This year, there were two fatal accidents along this road,’’ he said.

Another Seri Aman residents committee member T. T. Wong added that a signboard was only placed there after residents had complained to the council on Aug 30.

“We have forwarded our complaints to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, Subang MP R. Sivarasa, Paya Jaras assemblyman Mohd Bushro Mat Johor, Selayang municipal councillor Zulnizam Shahrani, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Selangor Environ-ment Department, Selangor Land and Mines Department and the Prime Minister’s Department.

“Every time it rains, floods occurred near the tunnel at the bottom of the hill. This is because the drains are clogged with cement,’’ he said.

Kampung Desa Aman Residents committee member Birkam Singh said about 600 residents gathered in front of the cement factory last month to protest against its operations.

“About 100 lorries use this main road to get to the existing two factories and it is endangering motorists especially residents who use this road to enter their housing estate,’’ he said.

Taman Suria Residents Association committee member Raymond Martin said he wanted the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) to close the factory or relocate it to another site.

“MPS should do something to solve the problem.

“The council should hold a meeting with the residents and the factory owners to come up with a solution.

“If MPS fails to act, we would organise a protest on a larger scale,’’ he said.

MPS public relations director Mohd Zin Masoad said he would send enforcement officers to conduct a surprise check on the factory before the end of this month.

“We are concerned over the residents’ safety and want to check if the factory is following the building guidelines,’’ he said.
