Teachers, your rights have been violated by some civil servants

Let's see if these civil servants are punished for what is obviously a breach of trust.

Hundreds of teachers in Selangor are hopping mad as their personal and private information were being made public by the state Education Department.

The 150,000-strong National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) representing the teachers is very concerned over the development as it was unethical and clearly violated the code of the teaching profession.

She explained that the problem arose with the issuance of a circular by the Selangor education office on May 25, directing the schools to collect subscriptions from the teachers for the Education Services Sports and Cultural Association (PSKPP).

Another reminder was sent on July 21, said Lok.

She said, what had irked the teachers was that the Petaling Perdana Education Office had gone one step further, by compiling the list of all teachers who were in arrears.

The list containing the name, identity card number, salary, telephone numbers and the arrears of individual teachers were widely circulated in all schools.

"This is a very clear breach of professional ethics and we demand the Education Ministry step in to check this abuse," said Lok.

The subscription fees, she added, was RM3 per year for teachers earning less than RM1,000 per month and RM5 annually for teachers earning more than RM1,000 monthly.

Lok pointed out that as far as the union was concerned, the membership of the association was not compulsory.

"But, from the manner the education department was going about collecting the subscription, conveyed that it was compulsory for teachers to be members," she said, adding that was against the principle of justice and fair play.
