'Racist' Kedah school principal slammed

The latest incidence of racism involving a Kedah school principal has drawn flak from various organisations' leaders.

Several Chinese newspapers yesterday reported a Sungai Petani secondary school principal ticking off some non-Muslim students for disrespecting Ramadan by having their meal during the fasting period.

The principal allegedly caused a stir by responding with racist remarks against the Chinese students.

General Secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia Hermen Shastri for one feels that the students involved had done nothing wrong.

“The non-Muslim students were simply enjoying a meal, which was their right and weren't hurting anybody,” he said.

Shastri observed that such incidents were “happening once too often” and “did not augur well for the country”.

National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Loke Yim Pheng felt that it was a problem of a lack of awareness amongst races and the different cultures and religions.

“Sometimes (for example), students only watch films from their own cultures so they might not understand other races or religions,” said Loke.

“To (the students) what they did was not wrong, but to others it was. Even so, I strongly believe teachers should not utter such insensitive words.”

'Act against errant principals'

National Parents Teachers Association Collaborative Council (NCPTA) president Mohamad Ali Hasan called for disciplinary measures to be taken against such principals.

“The immediate concern should be the suspension of such principals so that investigations can be sped up,” said Ali.

“Usually, only the district education office conducts investigations. An investigative committee working with parent teacher associations should be formed and results of its investigations should be made public.”

“They (the principals) should behave themselves in front of younger Malaysians,” he added.

According to report in several Chinese dailies, the principal upon seeing non-Muslim students having breakfast at the school canteen during the fasting period had allegedly called them “disrespectful” and that "they should go back to China".

The remark prompted a teacher from the same school remark that the Chinese students should take Air Asia since the fairs were cheap now.

This incident comes barely a week after a secondary schoolprincipal in Johor was accused of hurling racial slurs at non-Malays.
